A Century-Old Tradition

In the heart of Mombasa, a hidden gem thrives, where tradition meets artistry. The Akamba Handicraft Industry Cooperative Society, a century-old institution, has been preserving the rich heritage of the Akamba people. Founded by a group of skilled artisans, the cooperative has grown into a thriving hub of creativity and craftsmanship.  To delve deeper into the story behind these exquisite pieces, we sat down with Esther Gakonyo the Manager of Akamba Handicrafts Society and Julius Mwea Matu, current chairman of Akamba Handicrafts Cooperative Society

“Akamba Handicrafts was started by a group of skilled artisans who came from a place called Wamunyu before they came to Mombasa. They had learned this from one of their own called Mutisya Munge who was a combatant. Upon returning after the World War, he started wood carving at home. From there, some learned his craft and, seeing no local market, migrated to Mombasa to look for a ready market for their products.” Julius noted.

“What began as a humble gathering of skilled artisans has flourished into a thriving hub where generations of knowledge are passed down and where the old and the new blend seamlessly,” Esther added.

“As one of Kenya’s largest handicraft shops, we bring together talented artisans to showcase and sell their work. To join our cooperative, potential members must undergo a rigorous selection process, including interviews and skill assessments. Our experienced artisans provide ongoing training to ensure the highest quality products.” Esther indicated.

The Art of Creation

Esther stated that every piece of Akamba handicraft tells a story, crafted with meticulous detail and passion. Skilled artisans, both men and women, work tirelessly to transform raw materials into stunning works of art. From intricate wood carvings to delicate paintings, each creation reflects the unique style and heritage of the Akamba people.

The Akamba people, with their historical roots as hunters and gatherers, developed a deep connection with the natural world. Their art, particularly wood carving, is a celebration of the wildlife that has long been a part of their lives.

“Our primary wood source is Neem, which is readily available. We also utilize Jacaranda, a fast-growing species. In the past, we incorporated valuable woods like ebony, teak, and rosewood, but recent government regulations have limited our access to forest resources. To ensure a sustainable future, we are currently sourcing wood from individual farmers and exploring opportunities to establish our own tree plantations.” Julius noted.

Impact to the Artisans

The artisans earn a living by creating handicrafts, allowing them to provide for their families, including paying for their children’s education.

The cooperative is more than just a workplace; it’s a community bound by a shared passion for art and tradition. Members work together, sharing knowledge and skills, to ensure the highest quality of craftsmanship. The cooperative also plays a vital role in supporting the local community, providing employment opportunities and promoting sustainable development.

A Global Reach

The reach of Akamba handicrafts extends far beyond the borders of Kenya. Their exquisite creations have found homes in distant lands, admired for their beauty, authenticity, and cultural significance. The cooperative is committed to expanding its global market and sharing the rich heritage of the Akamba people with the world.

“We are yearning to make a component of the world. We want very many people to know us so that we can have an oversea market for our product.” added Julius.

Challenges and Innovations

Like any other industry, the Akamba handicraft industry has faced its share of challenges, including economic fluctuations, environmental concerns, and changing market demands. However, the cooperative has demonstrated remarkable resilience and adaptability. By embracing innovation and adopting sustainable practices, the artisans continue to thrive and evolve.

A Legacy of Craftsmanship

As the world changes, so too does the vision of Akamba handicraft industry co-operative society. With an eye on the future, they are nurturing the next generation of artisans and blessing new techniques and expanding their horizons.

“In every corner of the cooperative, there’s a story waiting to be told, a story of passion, perseverance and pride. The Akamba handicraft industry cooperative society is not just preserving a tradition, they are crafting the future with every bit of the hammer, every stroke of the brush and every touch of the hand. This is more than art. This is the heart of the people shared with the world.” Esther concluded.
